OPEN SPACE Spotlight: Reflection from Emerging Producer Tymia Councillor

Tymia is part of SPACED’s emerging producer program, OPEN SPACE, and they have been working with Circular Economies artists Ilona McGuire and Zali Morgan with the North Midlands Project in Carnamah. Tymia has shared with us a reflection of their experiences during the mentorship.

Learning about cyanotype from Zali and Ilona during their residencies in Carnamah with the North Midlands Project has been such a delight. I enjoyed personally participating in workshops, as well as seeing the members of the community getting involved. It was something new for most to try, or even hear about, but it was met with eager enthusiasm during the artists’ first respective residencies. Both Zali and Ilona were able to immerse themselves into the community wonderfully, despite the unfortunate passing of an Indigenous elder in Mullewa that stunted the attendance of Zali's remaining workshops.

It is always a pleasure to professionally and personally work closely alongside both Zali and Ilona during each visit, as I've come to consider them dear friends and mentors. Their guidance and encouragement have helped me so much in my own journey not only as an emerging Indigenous artist, but also as an artist in my own right. I'm looking forward to their next residency here with us at the North Midlands Project!
