SPACED Story
SPACED produces and commissions context-responsive and socially engaged art projects across the whole of Western Australia and beyond.
The art projects we commission emerge from programs and residencies that enable artists to engage with specific social, environmental, and historical contexts.
The artistic outcome of this process is presented to regional, national, and international audiences in exhibitions, publications, and online platforms.
SPACED was founded in 1998 by Tony York and Donna Dransfield, two farmers from the WA Wheatbelt, in partnership with artist Rodney Glick and writer–curator Marco Marcon. The concept for the organisation developed from discussions focusing on the necessity to build connections between contemporary art and non‐specialist audiences, especially, but not exclusively, in regional and remote communities.
Until 2009, our operations were mainly carried out in and around the small town of Kellerberrin, in the WA Wheatbelt. There, under the name IASKA (International Art Space Kellerberrin Australia), we ran an artist in residence program, and art gallery. In 2010 we changed the name of our organisation to SPACED and started running projects across the whole of Western Australia and beyond.
To manage such a geographically dispersed program, SPACED has established a network of partnerships with regional organisations and community. Partner organisations provide the local knowledge, logistic support and community participation that are essential to the success of our projects.
Our vision to is to be the organisation which brings the focus to Western Australia - as a location where locally, nationally and internationally relevant cultural conversations happen through art. promote a dialogue between regional, metropolitan and international perspectives.
Our mission is to continue to work with artists and host organisations in a whole-of-community approach to facilitate conversations and possibilities for creation and collaboration.
Our focus will continue to be local and regional communities across Western Australia and artists who have demonstrated an engaging, respectful and high-standard practice.
