Event Recap: Scents of Beverley Smell Walk and Open Studio by Susan Hauri-Downing & Tarsh Bates with Beverley Station Arts
Sue and Tarsh invited the Beverley community to their final open studio and the launch of Scents of Beverley Smell Trail as part of their Circular Economies residency with Beverley Station Arts. SPACED is pleased to share some images from the day.
Scents are produced by and cycle through land, bodies, water, atmosphere and time. Sue and Tarsh ask how smells connect us to place and how those connections change when the smells change. They have spent their residencies in Ballardong Boodja / Beverley foraging smell stories from human and non-human community members and groups, exploring how smells connect them to this place.
During the Open Studio, the community checked out the archive of scents Sue and Tarsh collected during their residency in Beverley which they have donated to the Beverley Station Arts Collection. From kangaroo projections on the IBC to the smell of sheep, the open studio provided the community a unique perspective of Beverley and invited them to reflect on olfactory connections to a place.
The community continued their smell adventure with Sue and Tarsh as they walked the Scents of Beverley Smell Trail and listened to smell stories told by locals whose labour nurtures Country in and around Beverley. The walk began at the Station Gallery, through to the community garden and bushland reserve.
Sue and Tarsh’s artworks displayed during their open studio will be presented in the Circular Economies exhibition at PICA in October.
Sue & Tarsh acknowledge the Ballardong people of the Noongar Nation, Traditional Custodians of this unceded land. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and honour their continuing connection to Country. Always was, always will be.
This project is supported by Beverley Community Garden, Beverley River Care Group, Beverley Station Arts, Emerging Producer Rebecca Luck and SPACED.
