Event Recap: Gesturing Together Creative Lab

Gesturing Together was the first SPACED Creative Lab, supported by City of Canning. Facilitated by Ainslie Allan, 20 WA-based artists participated in the Lab over one weekend.

On 6-7 June at Hillview Community Centre in Bentley, the current cohort of Know Thy Neighbour #4 artists and additional local artists gathered to broaden ideas on exchanges and processes in response to creating with people in place. The lab explored collaboration with people and communities to create new artworks across diverse artforms, including projects that focus on socially-engaged practices. We connected through a reflective lens through conversations, peer-to-peer sharing, activities such as foraging and sound-walks, and talks presented by guest artists.

Thank you to guest artists pvi collective (Kelly McCluskey and Steve Bull), Jessee Lee Johns, Boomerang and Spear (Kylie Bracknell), Rebecca McCauley and SPACED director Dr Elizabeth Pedler for sharing insights on socially-engaged practice. Thank you to Ainslie Allan for facilitating the lab, City of Canning for their community venue and all artists who participated over the two days.
