This weekend, Rural Utopias artist Jacky Cheng joins the John Curtin Gallery at Curtin University in an artist talk alongside Joshua Cocking, in which she will discuss her work ‘…that awaits at the end of life’, which recently awarded her the John Stringer Prize 2022. To follow, Jacky will facilitate a paper folding techniques and workshop, for a more tactile appreciation of her practice.

Through our programming, we have the opportunity to work alongside many diverse artists to realise an ambitious series of public activations. In the Know Thy Neighbour #3 program, artist Olga Cironis has been collaborating with Duncan Wright to investigate the relationships that the community of Armadale have to their place of dwelling.

In collaboration with the Cannery Arts Centre Melbourne -based Artist Ana Tiquia will spend six weeks in Esperance between 12 October to 24 November.

Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson has recently taken up a space in Bay One of Cullity Gallery, UWA School of Design as an Artist in Residence which has been excellent in terms of informing how elements from her community engagement with Victoria Park during Know Thy Neighbour #3 will come together for the final exhibition.

Georgie Mattingley is currently working with the community of Karlkula / Kalgoorlie-Boulder. This residency forms part of one of Spaced’s current programs, Rural Utopias.

The map can be realistic or fantastical, your local streets and parks, or to the moon! Where does your dog stop and sniff? Do they pull you in a particular direction? Where would you take your dog if you could go anywhere?

This weekend, Alana Hunt invites you to the Kununurra Picture Gardens for presentation of 'Nine Hundred and Sixty Seven', a video work chronicling the project summaries of every application submitted under Section 18 of the WA Aboriginal Heritage Act between 2010-20 requesting permission to "destroy, damage or alter an Aboriginal site". The screening also features a response by Waringarri Dancers performing Wangga & Lirrga.

Through Spaced’s programming, the concept of exchange is deeply important to the way we engage with artists and communities. Makers and locals alike have to opportunity to shape and influence discussions as they relate to a shared sense of place. In the case of Jacky Cheng, the life of the work she made during her Rural Utopias residency in Margaret River, continues to live on through this tender offering by Vivienne Garrett, in memory of B.

Yabini Kickett through the Know Thy Neighbour #3 program is seeking the lived experiences of people who were born, gave birth, or have worked in a midwifery context in the East Fremantle locale.
