Circular Economies Artist Interviews: A Look Into Their Work

Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) will open the final season of its 2026 artistic program on October 17 with Circular Economies, a major exhibition presented in partnership by SPACED and PICA that brings the outcomes of socially-engaged artist residencies across regional Western Australia into PICA’s Central Galleries.

Curated by Miranda Johnson, Circular Economies has been developed through an extended series of artist-in-residence programs across regional Western Australia. The exhibition brings together new commissions by Tarsh Bates and Susan Hauri-Downing, House of Natural Fiber, Ilona McGuire and Zali Morgan, Loren Kronemyer and Linda Tegg. Working with communities in Beverley, Narrogin, Carnamah, Esperance and Carnarvon, these artists developed site-responsive and community-engaged works spanning photography, video, textiles, sound and installation.

16 October, 6.00-8.00pm - Exhibition Opening Night

Celebrate the final season of 2026 with PICA After Hours, our re-imagined opening night program, featuring jade//vision performing from the first-floor balcony.

After Hours invites you to party with us and experience three new exhibitions at PICA: Circular Economies presented by SPACED, Cafe coming soon by Shannon Lyons and Foragers by Jumana Manna.

jade//vision is a collective of Boorloo and Walyalup-based musicians, artists and DJs, developing community through collaborative live events, records and music curation that delivers on the promise of what jazz can be for contemporary audiences.

The performance begins at 7pm—come for the art, stay for the music! The first 100 drinks are on the house, with a paid bar following.

17 October, 3.00-4.30pm - Circular Economies Artist Talks

Join us for the opening weekend of our final season for 2026 with a series of artist-in-conversations led by Circular Economies curator, Miranda Johnson. This will be accompanied by a live scent distillation in the galleries by Circular Economies artists Tarsh Bates and Susan Hauri-Downing.

Please note artist Shannon Lyons, who is exhibiting in PICA’s upstairs gallery, will be sharing an artist talk beforehand from 2-3pm. We encourage you to come along to both events if you can.
